Here at the Abingdon Surgery, we are now Dementia Friendly. This means that we have a dedicated clinician who has a specialist knowledge of dementia and our wider practice staff are trained on the condition and will help with the diagnosis, management, and care planning.
There are over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this figure is set to rise. 225,000 people develop dementia every year, roughly one person every three minutes.
Making the Abingdon Surgery a Dementia friendly practice helps to improve the patient experience through delivery of a set of improvements in care planning, communications, and awareness of dementia for our staff. This helps patients with dementia have better control over their lives and health. This will help patients and their carers understand the support services available to them and how to access these and make them feel valued and part of a community.
If you have any concerns about memory impairment, then don’t hesitate to get in contact with your GP for a further discussion and we can guide you about the next steps.
If you are a patient with a diagnosis of Dementia or a carer of someone with Dementia and need more support, then please speak to a member of our staff.
We are an advocate of Dementia Friendly Abingdon, which is a volunteer led initiative to raise understanding and promote dementia friendly practice within our local community. They organise weekly coffee mornings and lots of dementia friendly events. If you would like to get in contact with them more information is available on this link: www.facebook.com/dementiafriendlyabingdon. Alternatively you can contact them on: [email protected]
